The following report, even knowing that unfortunately,  have a clear  discouraging impact, pretends to show us that even in the “not ideal conditions”, human beings stick to their hobbies and practice them on the environments they inhabit  in spite of all the obstacles … whenever the wind helps, of course.

The Catatumbo lightning phenomena is one of the more active and frequent world electrical storms.  It is formed on the Catatumbo River in Venezuela and it takes place an average of 160 nights per year.

Lightning storms usually last up to 9 hours, beginning shortly after dusk.   Lightning is nearly continuous and so spectacular and predictable that it has been called the “Maracaibo Lighthouse” and even today it is used by fishermen and sailors as an aid to navigation in the lake.

Lake Maracaibo is located in the West of Venezuela, in the State of Zulia and has an approximated extension of 13.820 km² which makes of  it the largest lake in South America.  Economic, tourism and especially the explotation of the oil resources of Zulia has caused uncontrollably expoitation to the point that today much of its expansion is riddled with lemna or misnamed “The Green Spot”.

The Lake has about 5,000 extraction of crude oil between active and inactive wells. If we give an average of 600 meters of pipe to each well, and considering that the useful life of each well maintained tubing is 5 years, it is easy to imagine the environmental degradation in the area.

Leaks of crude oil are the first reflection of the deterioration of these pipes, due to the lack of maintenance and by the corrosive of the aquatic environment.  According to figures collected by the news media in the region, occur monthly around 15 spills in different scales, so, in the last 10 years, the Lake has suffered intoxication of about 1,800 spills about.

The lemna or duckweed is an aquatic plant that grows in nitrogen-rich environments, and has covered a high percentage of the shores of the Lake, attempting against the marine life and the well-being of all citizens who live on its shores.   There are a family of 20 species of Unisexual flowers that reproduce at a very fast pace and are capable of absorbing any nutrients, to get an idea, this aquatic species is able to extend up to 254 km between 12 and 14 days.  Nevertheless, the most important source of pollution of Lake Maracaibo is the oil industry, oil spills deteriorate the beaches, they produce millions of fish and birds and destroy part of the flora.

The existence of slaughter houses on the lake’s shores, that spill their waste into the lake are also a permanent source of organic pollution that decompose serves food for the bacteria, which use the oxygen dissolved in the water and oxidize organic matter.   The product of bacterial decomposition is carbon dioxide, nitrate and phosphate.  Heavy components of oil settle at the bottom of the sea and can kill animals that live in the depths like crabs, oysters, and make them unsuitable for human consumption.

Not all lake shores are polluted
Corporations and multinationals interested in the extraction of crude oil cover the lake bed with more than 24,000 kilometers of piping and the basin of the Lake with more than half a million kilometers of them, adding to that the effect of more than 450 flow stations to store and pump the oil, along with a fleet of tankers, barges, boatstugs and all kind of boats complementary to this type of activity, providing more toxicity to water.

But in spite of this, “not really inviting” picture, there is a bunch of people that, in search for the less polluted shores available, use some of the lake beaches to sail with their kites.  Especially on the area known as “North Beach” near the pier of Pequiven, in the city of Maracaibo, by the lake promenade, has taken place already some competitions of water sports from sailing to kite surfing, thanks to the efforts of the sports management of the Govern of Zulia and the Zulian Sailing Association.

Even being Lake Maracaibo the largest in South America, it is clear that Venezuela has many and more attractive kitesurfing spots and of course much less risk polluting destinations.

Among them, the Guajira coasts, Islas Margarita and Coche, El Yaque, the beaches of Adícora and Chichiriviche, Anare and Puerto Azul and even Turtle Island, which, although its name might be recognized as the infamous Island of Turtle, frequented in the past as a refuge for pirates and buccaneers, it’s not the same island, as the one described in of those stories.
This Turtle Island, the pirate’s one, it’s located in the North of Haiti, near the shore enclaves of Cap Haitien and Port de Paix.

And a final point which could definitely eliminate any desire to use the waters of the lake as the basis of kitesurf trips would be the fact that there are many documents that inform about the presence of sharks in Maracaibo Lake, especially the kind known as Toro shark.
